Olli the elephant

***

Do you already know Olli?
I met him at my local bookshop.
This was very amusing. But therefor you need to know three things:

– My Dad is Dutch.
– He passionately collects elephants. Primarily „type case sized“, but for example there‘s also a weather-elephant on the roof of his house instead of a weathercock.
– When my son was a baby, my Dad took great delight in forecasting his future profession. f.e. „Look at how he‘s kicking. He‘s definitely going to be a football player.“

And then I actually stumble across this book:

What will Olli be

By now, my son is 2,5 years old, and finds the books of the „Fant“ suuuper funny („Olli funny stuff does.“)
And it‘s even funnier, to look at the books together with Olli. Of course I made one myself. 🙂

This crochet pattern is published by kind permission of Diederiekje Bok, Mom of Olli.

You will need:

any desired yarn, colored grey, white and black
light grey emboidery yarn (or any other thin yarn)
crochet hook, fitting to yarn
stuffing
tapestry needle
sharp needle

Abbreviations:

ch … chain
tch … turning chain
sl st … slip stitch
sc … single crochet
inc … 2 sc in one stitch of the previous round
dec … 2 sc, crocheted together
tip: work only in front loops to avoid holes
st … stitch

pattern:

In order to make the body perfectly round, I got help at the Crochet Sphere Calculator by avtanski.net.

This is a great thing, you pick the sphere circumference in stitches and this thingy calculates where the in- and decreases are supposed to be.

The number in between the parentheses tells you, how many stitches the finished round will be. I recommend using a stitch marker (I merely use a contrasting colored piece of yarn).

6 dec, cut thread and sew up hole

Turn the elephant to the right side and stuff it.

eyes:

start with a magic ring
1. 6 sc
2. 6 inc
3. 6 dec

pull a black thread through the tightly fastened hole, tie a knot an pull the thread back through the hole; knot tightly and cut thread. This is the pupil.

Sew eyes to body.

tusks:

start with a magic ring
1. 6 sc
2. [inc, sc] x 6
3. 9 sc
4. 3 inc, 3 dec
5. 9 sc
6. 9 sc

Sew tusks to body.

ears:

To each row of single crochets follows a row of slip stitches. Starting with the 4th row, you stich into the sc of the second last row, thus you crochet around the slip stitches of the previous row.

1. 11 ch + tch
2. 11 sc
3. 11 sl st + tch
4. 11 sc
5. 11 sl st + tch
6. inc, 10 sc
7. 12 sl st + tch
8. 12 sc
9. 12 sl st + tch
10. 12 sc
11. 12 sl st + tch
12. 12 sc
13. 12 sl st + tch

15. 11 sl st + tch
16. dec, 9 sc
17. 10 sl st + tch
18. dec, 8 sc
19. 9 sl st + tch
20. 2 dec, 5 sc

Crochet around the ears as follows (start at the bottom side):
11 sc, 5 hStb, 3 hStb in the above „corner“, 9 sc

Sew ears to body.

Olli ears
This picture is for your orientation on how to sew the ears onto the body.

tail:

start with a magic ring

1. 3 sc
2. 3 sc
3. 3 sc
4. (2 inc, sc) in front loops only

Cut thread and sew tail on body.

***

To make Olli‘s seam, I used embroidery thread around the body (and sewed it through the trunk) and then fixed it with a pointy needle and small stitches.
